About this role

Affinity Water seeks a Scientist for a 12-month fixed-term contract. Reporting to the Principal Scientist-Chemistry, you will join the Scientific Services-Inorganic Chemistry team. This role ensures operational excellence and compliance with ISO17025 and Drinking Water Testing Specifications in a fast-paced UKAS accredited laboratory.

You will analyse routine and non-routine samples using documented methods to meet UKAS (DWTS) requirements within set timescales. Comply with internal quality control procedures and handle proficiency testing scheme samples promptly. Initiate actions when samples fail water quality standards.

Work in a high-throughput environment, using the laboratory information management system for sample registration, worksheets, and results entry. Mentor junior colleagues in specialist expertise and produce accurate reports on areas of responsibility. Explore efficiencies through new processes and technologies.

Requirements

  • Recognised degree in a relevant science-based subject, preferably chemistry or related to chemical sciences
  • Attention to detail that enjoys working in a routine environment
  • Ability to follow strict procedures time after time without deviation
  • Work well under pressure and have a common-sense approach to problem solving
  • Reasonable level of computer literacy and good communication skills
  • Flexibility to respond to accommodating and prioritising workload fluctuations

Responsibilities

  • Analyse routine and non-routine samples in accordance with documented methods and to UKAS (DWTS) requirements, within appropriate timescales
  • Comply with Internal Quality Control procedures and report in the appropriate manner
  • Analyse Proficiency Testing (PT) Scheme samples and report results in a timely manner
  • Initiate appropriate action when samples fail to meet required water quality standards or other agreed notification standards
  • Use the laboratory information management system (LIMS) to register samples, produce worksheets and enter analytical results in a timely manner
  • Mentor junior colleagues in areas of specialist expertise
  • Produce informative and accurate reports, as requested by line manager, on specific areas of responsibility
  • Explore ways to improve efficiencies and reduce costs through new processes and technologies
