The Materials/Polymer Scientist ethically and scientifically provides materials analysis and investigatory consultation through the Milwaukee Materials and Engineering Laboratory. They offer guidance and leadership on complex materials/engineering assignments to contribute to company profitability.

Designs and implements laboratory maintenance, calibration, and quality programs while preparing for artifact inspections. Performs non-destructive inspections, operates machinery to section parts, and extracts samples for metallurgical examination. Conducts hardness measurements and photographic/microscopic documentation, tracking all testing results and data.

Partners with forensic engineers to produce detailed reports on origin and cause of losses, including measurements and diagrams. Interfaces with internal and external stakeholders to coordinate testing and construct instrumented setups. Provides guidance to newer colleagues on complex assignments and assists during field inspections.

Inspects losses at residential, commercial, and industrial sites in lab or field as needed. Investigates damages and evidence to determine failure origins for insurers and litigation support. Serves as an expert witness in court and depositions, documenting billable hours.

Requirements

  • Expertise in materials analysis and failure causation investigations
  • Proficiency in non-destructive inspections and metallurgical sample preparation
  • Knowledge of product information, codes, standards, and forensic engineering principles
  • Experience with hardness testing, microscopy, and laboratory data management
  • Ability to produce detailed technical reports with measurements, diagrams, and photographic evidence
  • Skills in operating lab machinery for sectioning artifacts and constructing test setups
  • Familiarity with polymer materials characterization and engineering failure analysis

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement laboratory maintenance, calibration, and quality programs; prepare lab for artifact inspections
  • Perform non-destructive inspections of artifacts to document failure analysis; section large parts and prepare cross-sections
  • Serve as materials analysis subject matter expert; research product information, codes, and standards
  • Conduct hardness measurements and photographic/microscopic documentation; track and catalog testing results
  • Partner with forensic engineers to produce reports on origin and cause of losses; assist in field inspections
  • Interface with stakeholders to set up projects and coordinate testing; construct instrumented test setups
  • Provide guidance and leadership to newer colleagues on complex materials/engineering assignments
