About this role
The Technical Officer reports to the Technical Coordinator (Process Chemistry & Environmental) and provides expert technical services and advice. This full-time, continuing position supports the effective operation of designated laboratories and workspaces. It is based at the Melbourne CBD campus but may require work at other university campuses.
The role involves maintenance, operation, and demonstration of laboratory equipment and instrumentation. It delivers high-quality technical support to staff and students under the Technical Coordinator's direction. The incumbent ensures timely upkeep of facilities and supports OHS standards compliance.
Working within the STEM College Office, professional staff provide exceptional support across Learning, Teaching, Quality, and shared services functions. Teams handle Student Lifecycle, Planning & Operations, Technical Services, Program & Governance, and WIL & Engagement. Digital solutions like Workday streamline processes for operational efficiencies.
The College Office ensures consistent adherence to university policies while enriching student learning experiences. Staff at City and Bundoora campuses can cross-skill, engage in professional development, and advance career paths. This client-focused service supports research and engagement activities.
Requirements
- Demonstrated knowledge/experience in a Chemical and/or Environmental Engineering laboratory
- Demonstrated experience in operating, training and maintaining laboratory-based instruments relevant to chemical and environmental engineering, analytical chemistry, wastewater, and/or PC1/PC2 facilities
- Proven track record of building strong relationships with stakeholders in a client-focused framework
- Demonstrated understanding of current OH&S legislation and related field regulations or standards
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to work in cross-functional teams with diverse people
Responsibilities
- Provide expert technical services and advice to support laboratory operations
- Maintain, operate, and demonstrate laboratory equipment and instrumentation
- Deliver high-quality technical support to staff and students
- Ensure timely upkeep of laboratory facilities
- Support implementation and compliance of OHS standards
- Operate, train on, and maintain instruments relevant to chemical and environmental engineering
- Generate appropriate operating documentation for laboratory equipment
- Manage PC1/PC2 facilities and wastewater-related equipment
