About this role

It offers multidisciplinary teams with nationally recognized skills in engineering, science, economics, public health, information technology, and communications. We seek a highly motivated Research Chemist with in-depth knowledge of chemical composition, structure, properties, processes, applications, interactions, hazards, production techniques, and safe disposal methods.

The role focuses on hands-on technical execution, including preparation, extraction, and analysis of target compounds from environmental sample matrices like air sampling canisters, XAD, thermal desorption tubes, SPE cartridges, and filters. Prepare test solutions, compounds, reagents, and sampling media prior to field deployment. Analyze samples using GC/MS, LC/MS, or other techniques, reduce data, and report results timely.

Initially emphasize technical execution with quick opportunities to lead projects, shape technical direction, and support team development. Take ownership of complex projects contributing to impactful environmental and combustion research. Confer with scientists or engineers to interpret results, develop tests, troubleshoot instruments, and communicate processes and challenges.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience operating gas chromatography (GC) instrumentation, preferably GC/MS for EPA methods
  • Proficiency with instrument plumbing, including gas and liquid lines
  • Familiarity with standard laboratory hygiene practices and protocols
  • Legible and accurate scientific writing
  • In-depth knowledge of chemical composition, structure, properties, processes, and transformations
  • Understanding of chemical applications, interactions, hazards, production techniques, and safe disposal methods
  • Ability to maintain and troubleshoot laboratory instruments
  • Skills to prioritize, perform, and communicate effectively in fast-paced environment

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional technical support within allocated task resources and contribute to scientific operations efficiency
  • Adhere to Quality Assurance Program Plans, Work Plans, SOPs, and Health & Safety Plans; document laboratory activities
  • Maintain laboratory spaces according to Safety, Health, and Environmental Management criteria
  • Prepare test solutions, compounds, or reagents for experiments
  • Perform preparation, extraction, and analysis of target compounds from environmental sample matrices
  • Prepare sampling media such as XAD, filters, canisters, thermal desorption tubes prior to field deployment
  • Analyze samples using GC/MS, LC/MS; reduce data and report analytical results
  • Conduct quality control tests, evaluate results, and perform corrective actions
