About this role
We are seeking an Associate Staff Member involved in the performance of a full range of mass spectrometry methods and analyses on radiological samples. This position supports ORNL projects including environmental stewardship programs, nuclear fuel cycle research, and radioisotope production and purification. It resides in the Nuclear Analytical Chemistry Section’s Radioactive Materials Analytical Laboratory Group.
The role involves preparing and analyzing samples for regulatory compliance, developing and optimizing methods for trace element and isotope ratio analysis, and maintaining ICP-MS instruments. The successful candidate interprets and reports analytical data while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. Strict safety and radiological protocols are followed when handling radioactive materials.
Work occurs in C-zoned laboratories, radiochemical hoods, and gloveboxes within the Chemical Sciences Division. Responsibilities include troubleshooting instrument performance, documenting procedures, and ensuring adherence to ISO 17025:2017, FDA, NRC, and customer guidelines. Compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality programs is essential.

Requirements
- BS degree in chemistry, biology, physics or closely related discipline
- Experience with mass spectrometry methods including ICP-MS for radiological samples
- Ability to perform trace element and isotope ratio analysis
- Knowledge of sample preparation and chemical separations for nuclear materials
- Qualified to work in radiological facilities with radiation worker training
- Familiarity with safety protocols for handling radioactive materials
- Proficiency in analytical calculations and data reporting
- Adherence to regulatory standards such as ISO 17025:2017, FDA, and NRC
Responsibilities
- Perform sample preparations and chemical separations for radiochemical determinations of nuclear materials
- Independently perform detailed analytical operations in C-zoned laboratories and radiochemical hoods and gloveboxes
- Conduct laboratory tests to develop, modify, and refine operational and experimental procedures
- Obtain and maintain ORNL training requirements for radiation workers including respirator wearer qualification
- Utilize Windows-based personal computers for instrumentation operation, data reporting, analytical calculations, and sample management
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
- Maintain ICP-MS instruments for peak performance and troubleshoot instrument issues
- Interpret and report analytical data from mass spectrometry analyses on radiological samples
