About this role
The Analytical Chemist - Metals is responsible for analysis and reporting of primarily coker feed samples in addition to the testing of scheduled unit and effluent refinery samples. This role operates and maintains all instrumentation in the metals laboratory to minimise downtime and associated LPOs. An analytical forensic mindset supports troubleshooting of unusual analytical requests and substance identification.
Calibration, adjustment, and maintenance of instruments ensures optimal performance across all metals laboratory equipment. The chemist stays conversant with analytical techniques and method development, revising methods to meet user needs and internal or external quality standards. Special analytical testing is performed as directed by supervision.
Customers are consulted regarding testing requirements while all interested parties receive prompt notification of unusual or off-specification results. A positive safety culture is supported through HSE and quality audits. Industry committees, meetings, and training relevant to the role are attended and actively supported.
Others are trained to a standard that ensures no interruption to business operations during absences. Problem solving ability is demonstrated daily with an analytical forensic mindset. The position contributes to the Humber Refinery's role in the UK’s decarbonisation efforts.
Requirements
- Legal right to live and work in the UK
- Degree or equivalent level qualification in Chemistry related subject
- Industry expert in the field of metals analysis
- Intimate knowledge of metals laboratory testing and procedures and their relation to product quality and operations
- Ability to develop methods and procedures
- Ability and willingness to train others
- Can interpret data with knowledge and experience to act upon it
- Knowledge of calibration principles, methods and record keeping
