About this role
This role involves conducting routine analyses of laboratory specimens on all patient types to aid in the diagnosis of disease. Testing requires knowledge and application of laboratory science techniques, attention to detail, and quality control.
Day-to-day work includes using advanced instrumentation such as Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) and Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LCMS/MS) to analyze chemical samples. The technician also performs instrument maintenance, monitors inventory of consumables and reagents, and follows all hospital and laboratory policies for specimen handling, processing, and reporting.
This position is based in a clinical laboratory setting at Akron Children's Hospital, working onsite with a full-time 1st shift schedule. The environment emphasizes adherence to Good Lab Practices (GLPs) and collaboration with physicians and caregivers to report critical information within acceptable timeframes.

Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of lab experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience performing high complexity testing is required.
- Knowledge of Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) and Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LCMS/MS) is preferred.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
- Experience working in an electronic medical record system (e.g., EPIC) or similar software is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Use advanced instrumentation including Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) and Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LCMS/MS) to analyze chemical samples.
- Test chemical samples for quality control.
- Follow all hospital and laboratory policies for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
- Report critical information to physicians or caregivers as indicated by policy and within acceptable timeframes.
- Monitor inventory of consumables and reagents.
- Perform instrument maintenance.
- Adhere to and execute Good Lab Practices (GLPs).
