As a Senior Research Chemist, tap into your curiosity and collaborate with innovative 3Mers around the world. This role drives differentiated performance in 3M products through advanced chemistry. It provides a transition from private, public, government or military experience to a 3M career.

Synthesize and characterize specialty monomers, additives, fillers and polymers daily. Collaborate with 3M partners to develop chemistry for product roadmaps. Scale qualified chemistries with chemical manufacturing teams while authoring reports and patents.

Work with diverse teams, including external partners, in a global environment. Present findings at team meetings using PowerPoint, Excel or Word. Safely maintain an organized chemistry laboratory.

Open to Fall/Winter 2025 PhD graduates starting January 2026. 3M offers programs supporting physical and financial well-being. Relocation assistance may be authorized for on-site role in Maplewood, MN.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
  • Five (5) years of laboratory environment experience in an academic, private, public, government or military environment
  • Ph.D. or Post-Doc in Chemistry with a focus on small molecule or polymer synthesis, reaction methodology, physical organic principles or materials synthesis
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Performing and guiding self-initiated research programs
  • Experience working with diverse teams including external partners
  • Experience presenting scientific research and/or research proposals
  • Authoring scientific publications and/or patents

Responsibilities

  • Synthesize and characterize specialty monomers, additives, fillers and polymers to drive differentiated performance in 3M products
  • Collaborate with 3M partners to develop chemistry for 3M product roadmaps
  • Scale qualified chemistries with 3M’s chemical manufacturing teams
  • Author technical reports, patents and research proposals
  • Maintain electronic laboratory notebook records of hypothesis driven research including test conditions, results and observations
  • Summarize experimental data using Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, Word or other software applications
  • Present at team meetings and other forums
  • Safely maintain an organized chemistry laboratory
