About this role
Join our team of ~30 Analytical Scientists and play a key role in protecting public health. Under contract to the MHRA, LGC hosts the UK’s Official Medicines Control Laboratory for chemical testing and the British Pharmacopoeia Commission Laboratory. Seek a skilled Analytical Chemist to support high-quality physico-chemical testing, including method development, validation, and technical leadership of junior analysts.
In this hands-on laboratory position, analyze a diverse range of samples including British Pharmacopoeia Chemical Reference Substances, Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, over-the-counter medicines, antibiotics, herbal products, and packaging materials. Use techniques such as HPLC and GC, GC/LC-MS, Mid-IR, Raman and UV spectroscopy, dissolution, and wet chemistry. Determine the composition of various substances with precision to ensure flawless results.
The laboratories operate under a government Owned, Contractor Operated model at our site in Teddington. Procure, establish and maintain reference standards and support the British Pharmacopoeia Commission in establishing monographs for generic medicinal products. Strictly follow protocols, apply new methods, and collaborate to uphold outstanding standards while maintaining the ISO/IEC 17025-accredited quality system.
Work independently on projects, coordinate workloads, and support Senior Analytical Chemists to achieve key performance indicators. Contribute to drafting analytical reports, methods, and safety assessments. Play an integral role in wider laboratory operations with world-class technology and methodologies.
Requirements
- Degree or equivalent experience in Chemistry or closely related field, with solid theoretical understanding of HPLC, GC, IR, UV spectrometry, and titration
- Practical experience with at least two of these analytical techniques
- Methodical, organised, and accurate approach to laboratory work
- Strong problem-solving skills and tenacity to tackle technical challenges
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to maintain clear, detailed, and accurate records
- Dedication to maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organised work environment
Responsibilities
- Support MHRA Laboratories with high-quality physico-chemical testing
- Perform method development and validation
- Provide technical leadership of junior analysts
- Analyze diverse samples including BPCRS, APIs, over-the-counter medicines, antibiotics, herbal products, and packaging materials
- Draft analytical reports, methods, and safety assessments
- Run, interpret, and validate analytical data
- Contribute to the maintenance of the ISO/IEC 17025-accredited quality system
- Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and daily performance checks on laboratory equipment
