About this role

Oxford Nanopore Technologies employs experts in nanopore science, molecular biology, informatics, engineering and more. The company’s sequencing platform enables real-time analysis of native DNA or RNA in scalable formats from pocket to population scale. We seek a highly motivated synthetic chemist to generate target analytes, materials and develop new methods for sequencing platforms.

This role involves synthesis and purification of target compounds from small molecules to polymers for biochemistry and materials chemistry applications. The position supports retro-synthetic design and delivery of target analytes across the division. Routine presentation of data to collaborators is also required.

Based in the Research Division, the role interacts with Research and Development teams. Work as part of the Chemistry Research team, providing chemistry insight and support to projects. Collaborate closely with groups across the division.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of organic chemistry and polymer chemistry
  • Practical experience in synthetic chemistry
  • Analytical techniques including NMR, FTIR and mass spectrometry
  • Experience of HPLC and confocal microscopy advantageous
  • Enthusiastic individual with strong work ethic
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for interdisciplinary role

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design, synthesis and purification of organic molecules both small molecule and polymeric according to project needs
  • Perform reactions using standard and advanced synthetic techniques
  • Characterise compounds using techniques including 1D and 2D NMR, FTIR, HPLC and LCMS
  • Maintain detailed experimental records, procedures and results
  • Adhere to Health and Safety guidelines and write COSHH assessments
  • Test and evaluate synthesised compounds using ONT's sequencing technology
  • Collaborate closely with groups across the division providing chemistry insight and support
