About this role

The Polymer Engineer designs, develops, and maintains sheet molding compound (SMC) formulations for manufacturing compression molded parts. This role ensures adequate manufacturability while meeting product performance specifications and quality standards. Collaboration with engineering, production, procurement, research, and quality teams optimizes SMC performance and drives continuous improvement.

Daily responsibilities include managing SMC formulation design and use, overseeing raw material screening, and routine testing. Conduct experiments to evaluate alternate raw materials and compare product performance to requirements. Formulate adjustments to optimize cost and performance while developing related documentation.

Works closely with product management on new product launches and with procurement and research teams on vendor selection. Leads root cause analysis and corrective actions for SMC issues. Supports lean manufacturing initiatives and contributes to cost reduction efforts.

Trains and mentors team members on SMC production, testing best practices, and safety procedures. Ensures compliance with all safety regulations and company policies. Fosters a collaborative environment to drive measured improvements in operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Science
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in sheet molding compound design and management within a manufacturing environment
  • Strong knowledge of SMC compression molding
  • Prior SMC formulating experience
  • Prior compression molding experience
  • Established leadership experience
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
