AbbVie

North Chicago, US · Full-time · $110,000 – $150,000

About this role

AbbVie's Process Chemistry Chromatographic Separations Lab seeks an Associate Scientist II or Scientist I. The team collaborates across disciplines, providing expertise in preparative chromatography for R&D programs. They purify peptides, ADC drug-linkers, chiral compounds, and isolate low-level API impurities.

The role involves developing scalable purification processes and overseeing pilot-scale implementation under cGMP at the North Chicago Chemical Pilot Plant. Conduct laboratory and pilot-scale tasks, analyze data, and drive project objectives. Troubleshoot complex separation challenges with hands-on chromatographic method development.

Work in a collaborative team environment, building relationships with cross-functional partners. Demonstrate initiative and technical proficiency supporting research projects. Experience with peptides is highly desirable.

Contribute to novel and advanced separations technologies to advance the AbbVie pipeline. Foster a learning environment, encourage diverse ideas, and support continuous process improvement. Adhere to corporate standards for safety, quality, and material handling.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 3 years (Associate Scientist II) or 5 years (Scientist I) relevant experience; or Master’s degree with no additional experience (Associate Scientist II) or typically +2 years (Scientist I).
  • Strong technical background in Separations Science, with theoretical and practical knowledge.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing, troubleshooting, and modifying chromatographic methods and purification protocols.
  • Broad expertise in analytical techniques, with emphasis on chromatography, compound purification, and spectral analysis.
  • Hands-on experience developing chromatographic methods and troubleshooting complex separation challenges.
  • Experience working with peptides highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute purification processes supporting development of small molecule, antibody drug conjugate, and peptide clinical candidates.
  • Demonstrate scientific initiative and creativity in planning, executing, and troubleshooting experiments.
  • Conduct a range of laboratory and pilot-scale tasks, analyze and interpret data, and drive project objectives.
  • Suggest, adapt, and implement new or improved experimental protocols/techniques, consulting relevant literature.
  • Build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with peers and cross-functional partners.
  • Foster a learning environment, encourage diverse ideas, and support continuous process improvement.
  • Understand and adhere strictly to corporate standards for conduct, safety, quality, and proper handling of materials.
