About this role

Stepan Company seeks an Analytical Research Chemist to join the R&D team at the Global Technology Center in Northfield, IL. Reporting to an Analytical Manager, you will plan and execute advanced analytical techniques, focusing on Mass Spectrometry (MS) and Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS). Projects involve separation and analysis of surfactants, polymers, and blends using state-of-the-art methods.

Develop and execute MS and LC/MS techniques to support assigned projects. Independently manage projects by planning, scheduling, coordinating, and following up. Analyze complex mixtures of surfactants and polymers with precision.

Mentor colleagues by providing technical advice and training, and direct work group members. Foster collaboration across teams and departments to build bridges and remove barriers. Actively participate in safety and waste programs while adhering to policies.

Present technical information on new products, technologies, and methods to customers and conferences. Review patents, literature, and databases in areas of expertise. Document work in organized lab notebooks and produce detailed project reports.

Requirements

  • Laboratory experience in analytical chemistry, particularly related to separation and chromatographic techniques for complex mixtures
  • Demonstrated abilities to manage multiple complex projects and independently develop strategy for overall project load
  • Demonstrated ability to perform self-directed projects and communicate results clearly, concisely and timely
  • Experience with data and error analysis, stoichiometric and formulation calculations, and instrument/method validation
  • Advanced understanding and ability to utilize MS, GC, HPLC, FT-IR, NMR and separation techniques for surfactant and polymer mixtures

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute advanced analytical techniques, especially Mass Spectrometry (MS) and Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS)
  • Independently manage and lead projects including planning, scheduling, coordinating and following-up
  • Present technical information such as new products, technologies, methods to customers and industry conferences
  • Mentor department work group, providing technical advice and training to colleagues and directing work of members
  • Foster collaboration with team members and build constructive relationships across work groups and departments
  • Actively participate in safety/waste programs and adhere to safety policies/standards
  • Review technical information, patents and literature pertinent to fields of expertise
  • Document and communicate technical work and findings via verbal updates, laboratory notebooks and project reports
