About this role
The Laboratory Trainer/GC Chemist trains all new laboratory employees on testing, company quality standards, and safety. This role also trains existing staff on new lab testing methods. It involves analyzing samples via GC methodologies and reviewing data for client release.
Daily duties include developing technical and hands-on training programs covering methods, techniques, equipment, materials handling, waste practices, and documentation. The trainer performs basic skills training, manages processes, and administers new hire and ongoing programs through demonstrations and observations. Collaboration with management identifies personnel for method qualification.
In this laboratory environment, the role requires observing method execution to spot technique issues and training on resolutions. Participation in SOP reviews ensures consistency with practices. Routine maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration of GC instruments, and on-call support are essential amid stressful conditions.
Technical training plans stay complete and current with compliant documentation. Development and delivery of topic-specific training materials support ongoing qualification. Handling chemical, petrochemical, and petroleum products demands proficiency in standards like ASTM, UOP, and IP.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or related science preferred, or equivalent work experience with minimum 2 years direct transferable experience working with GCs
- Knowledgeable in ASTM, IP, and UOP standards relating to GC, GC/MS, and HPLC
- Ability to work with chemical, petrochemical, and petroleum products
- Ability to work in stressful and demanding environment
- Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) experience preferred
- Proficient in the use of laboratory equipment
- Ability to read and comprehend analysis and safety standards in English, including ASTM, UOP, IP
- Great work history with track record of being responsible individual
Responsibilities
- Develop technical and hands-on training programs for laboratory personnel on methods, techniques, equipment, materials handling, waste, and documentation
- Perform basic laboratory skills training for scientific staff and manage training process and documentation
- Administer new hire and ongoing training programs including method review, demonstration, side-by-side running, and personnel observation
- Observe method execution to identify technique problems and train on resolutions or required changes
- Participate in review of SOPs for consistency with laboratory practices
- Prepare samples, analyze using GC, GC/MS, HPLC instruments, and review data
- Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of GC equipment to ensure accurate analysis
- Ensure all GC Quality Control records are up to date and analyze QC samples
