Dübendorf, CH · Full-time · CHF 47,000 – CHF 53,000
About this role
Empa, a research institution of the ETH Domain, develops advanced porous materials for insulation, sorption, and energy applications. The Laboratory for Building Energy Materials and Components seeks a highly motivated Ph.D. candidate with a strong background in organic and/or polymer chemistry. The position focuses on porous polymer materials, building on polyimide aerogels expertise.
The project aims to elucidate monomer structure, solvent choice, and oligomer formation effects on polymerization pathways and network evolution. Key objectives include understanding polymer-solvent interactions, gelation kinetics, and designing new monomers for tailored hierarchical pore structures. It establishes structure-property relationships linking molecular design to performance in aerogels.
You will take a leading role in shaping and executing the research, supported by supervisors, in close collaboration with academic and industrial partners. Responsibilities involve synthesis strategies, mechanism investigations, and advanced characterization techniques. The project is embedded in an industry-sponsored framework providing resources and innovation pathways.
Opportunities include developing independent ideas, supervising interns, contributing to patents, and leading publications. Present results at international conferences and conduct occasional travel to the Asia-based industry partner. Successfully complete doctoral coursework, mid-term evaluation, and defense at a Swiss university.
