The role conducts complex research, development, and performance testing to meet Technology Development team objectives. It focuses on using theory and mechanism to drive innovation while leading projects.

Perform formulation, synthesis, and testing activities using the Afton Product Development Process. Develop fundamental understanding of lubricating oil performance, including structure/function relationships, reaction kinetics, and dose-response. Design and synthesize new components, characterizing them with NMR, MS, and spectroscopy.

Act as technical project lead, directing other team members on multiple projects. Evaluate data, provide recommendations, and identify hurdles to project completion. Participate in technical reviews, present findings, and engage cross-functional stakeholders like business and marketing teams.

Lead special research projects independently and oversee technical activities. Represent Afton at technical conferences and industry activities. Participate in IP activities, including patent filings and invention disclosures, while maintaining self-development through seminars.

Requirements

  • BS/PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or equivalent
  • BS/PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Polymer Science and Engineering preferred
  • Proficiency in polymer synthesis and characterization techniques
  • Experience with analytical methods including NMR, MS, and spectroscopy
  • Knowledge of structure/function relationships and reaction kinetics in lubricants
  • Ability to design test plans, milestones, and manage projects
  • High level of communication and presentation skills
  • Understanding of lubricating oil performance mechanisms

  • Evaluates data and provides recommendations to R&D and project leaders
  • Leads or directs special research projects and oversees technical team members
  • Participates in technical reviews and presents findings to teams and stakeholders
  • Completes complex analytical testing and prepares detailed test reports
  • Ensures safe laboratory practices and maintains ISO or Quality System documentation
