About this role
We are seeking a Staff Member involved in the performance of a full range of mass spectrometry methods and analyses on radiological samples. This position supports ORNL projects including environmental stewardship programs, research for nuclear fuel cycles, and chemical operations for radioisotope production and purification. It resides in the Nuclear Analytical Chemistry Section’s Radioactive Materials Analytical Laboratory Group in the Chemical Sciences Division.
The role involves preparing and analyzing samples to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, developing and optimizing analytical methods for trace element and isotope ratio analysis, and maintaining ICP-MS instruments for peak performance. The successful candidate will interpret and report analytical data while following strict safety and radiological protocols when handling radioactive materials. Additional tasks include troubleshooting instrument performance and documenting experimental procedures.
Work occurs in multidisciplinary teams within C-zoned laboratories, radiochemical hoods, and gloveboxes. Responsibilities emphasize adherence to regulatory guidelines such as ISO 17025:2017, FDA, NRC, and customer standards. Collaboration addresses novel and complex technical issues in radiological facilities.

Requirements
- Experience with mass spectrometry methods and analyses on radiological samples
- Proficiency in preparing and analyzing samples for trace element and isotope ratio analysis
- Skill in maintaining and troubleshooting ICP-MS instruments
- Ability to interpret and report analytical data from radiological samples
- Knowledge of regulatory standards including ISO 17025:2017, FDA, NRC
- Capability to work safely with radioactive materials in C-zoned labs, hoods, and gloveboxes
- Familiarity with chemical separations for radiochemical determinations
Responsibilities
- Perform sample preparations and chemical separations for radiochemical determinations of nuclear materials
- Independently perform detailed analytical operations in C-zoned laboratories and radiochemical hoods and gloveboxes
- Conduct laboratory tests to develop, modify, and refine operational and experimental procedures
- Obtain and maintain ORNL training requirements for radiation worker performing analytical work including respirator wearer qualification
- Utilize Windows-based personal computers for instrumentation operation, data reporting, analytical calculations, and sample management
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
- Collaborate with staff to address novel and complex technical issues
- Lead by example according to ORNL’s Research Code of Conduct
