About this role

This position is within the Advanced Polymer Synthesis group at the Bridgestone Americas Center for Research and Technology in Akron, OH. The Senior Polymer Synthetic Chemist develops new polymers and optimizes polymerization techniques to enhance tire products and diversified offerings. Candidates exhibit strong problem-solving and communication skills in polymer science.

In a fast-paced collaborative environment, conduct hands-on chemical and polymerization synthesis experiments along with characterization studies. Propose and research new technologies, products, and innovative concepts by investigating polymer properties under various conditions. Prepare research proposals, technical specifications, reports, and presentations.

Work in and lead multidisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers to meet customer and stakeholder needs. Participate in coordinating projects across business units and initial scale-up studies with pilot plant. Support relationships with internal and external stakeholders through strong communication and negotiation.

Mentor junior scientists and co-ops on projects while supporting the IP portfolio via invention disclosures and patent applications. Recommend plans for new polymer products and continuous improvement activities. Provide technical expertise to the legal department on polymer materials.

Requirements

  • PhD in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Organic Chemistry, or Inorganic Chemistry
  • Strong understanding of chemistry fundamentals including organic, organo-metallic, and polymer
  • Experience in the synthesis of elastomers
  • Strong understanding of polymer physical chemistry/physics
  • Experience using anionic and Ziegler-Natta polymerization chemistries
  • Knowledge of material science and formulation of rubber compounds
  • Experience with natural and synthetic resins, low-molecular weight polymers, and/or bio-based materials
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Recommend plans for developing and implementing new polymer products
  • Coordinate and oversee execution of projects across multiple business units and initial scale-up studies with pilot plant
  • Propose and research potential new technologies, products, innovative concepts, and testing methods on polymer properties
  • Conduct hands-on chemical and polymerization synthesis experiments and characterization studies
  • Prepare research proposals, technical specifications, reports, presentations, and specify laboratory test equipment
  • Support company IP portfolio by drafting invention disclosures, patent applications, and providing technical expertise
  • Make recommendations on new technological equipment, materials, and continuous improvement activities
  • Mentor junior scientists and co-ops in their projects
