About this role
The position reinforces material characterization expertise at Eastman's European Technical Centre in Zwijnaarde, Belgium. It supports the group leader and EMEA Technology Director in defining a strategy around material testing, particularly rheology. The scientist develops polymer and formulation testing methods using tensile tests, thermal analyses, and rheology techniques.
Daily responsibilities include hands-on use of rheometers, viscometers, TGA, and DSC. The role involves developing test methods for innovation projects addressing process issues, thermal stability, and application properties. Expertise in rheology is desired, with encouragement for motivated material engineering graduates.
The scientist interacts with Eastman's EMEA innovation and sustainability programs across businesses. Applications span coatings, cosmetics, detergents, automotive, packaging, and medical uses. Collaboration occurs with cross-functional teams including coating, cosmetics, plastics, automotive experts, customer support, and process teams.
Organize and prioritize laboratory projects based on internal timelines and objectives. Coach and train technicians on developed methods with potential to grow as a people manager. Ensure documentation of research results in technical reports, test methods, and notebooks.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in polymer chemistry, plastic engineering, chemical engineering, or chemistry; preferably PhD in rheology or equivalent experience
- In-depth knowledge of polymer materials and formulations as well as advanced material characterization techniques in rheology (rotational rheometers, DMA), thermal analysis (DSC, TGA), morphology, and spectroscopy (FTIR, NMR)
- Hands-on experience with rheometers, viscometers, TGA, DSC, and related instrumentation
- Self-learner with proactive mindset and high drive to test new ideas in the lab
- High energy for problem-solving and structure/properties understanding projects
