About this role
Material Science Lab is part of the Research and Development facilities in Shugart building, supporting HDD and some non-HDD material selection, qualification, and failure analysis. The lab performs component-level material analysis, proactive qualification for new products, and drive failure analysis to improve quality and robustness. It works closely with multiple cross-sites, cross-functional teams.
Conduct research and development in organic/inorganic chemistry to enhance hard disc drive performance and reliability. Study new materials performance under extreme test environments for HDD use. Investigate interaction effects of new materials on system-level drive to improve compatibility and performance.
Operate independently on most assignments with minimal day-to-day supervision in this career-oriented, journey-level position. Work on problems of diverse scopes requiring evaluation of identifiable factors. Demonstrate good judgement in selecting methods and techniques for solutions.
Stay up to date with latest advancements in organic/inorganic chemistry and data storage technology to drive innovation. Prepare technical reports, presentations, and publications to communicate findings. Requires post-doctoral or equivalent industry research experience to lead technical investigations.
Requirements
- PhD in Organic Chemistry or Chemistry or Material Science or related field
- Strong background in the synthesis and characterization of organic materials
- Proven track record of research excellence, demonstrated through publications and patents
- Post-doctoral or equivalent industry research experience with demonstrated ability to lead technical investigations
- Experience in Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS), GC/Q-TOF, GCxGC, ToF-SIMS interpretation, Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectrometer (FTIR), Raman and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)/Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis
Responsibilities
- Conduct research and development in organic/inorganic chemistry to enhance the performance and reliability of hard disc drives
- Study new materials performance under extreme test environment/conditions for use in hard disc drive
- Study interaction effects of new material/component on a system-level (drive) to improve compatibility and performance
- Stay up to date with the latest advancements in organic/inorganic chemistry and data storage technology to drive innovation
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and publications to communicate research findings and progress
- Develop solutions to technical problems through the application of materials science and engineering principles, theories, and concepts
