At Johnson & Johnson Vision, the Director of Synthetic Chemistry and Raw Materials leads a team of synthetic chemists, polymer chemists, scientists, and formulation experts. This role drives material development for contact lens and ocular implant products. It supports innovation goals by creating novel monomer systems and securing intellectual property.

Fueled by innovation at the intersection of biology and technology, the team develops smarter, less invasive, personalized vision treatments. The director collaborates with internal and external partners to scale chemistries and commercialize them. Daily work involves overseeing characterization of monomers and polymerization processes.

As a People Leader in R&D Product Development and Materials/Biomaterials Science, manage scientific professionals and direct research priorities. Foster impactful chemistry and material innovations through resource allocation and staff development. Coordinate design-build-test activities across functions in Jacksonville, Florida.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering
  • 8-12 years of experience in synthetic chemistry or related field
  • Experience leading teams of synthetic chemists, polymer chemists, and formulation scientists
  • Expertise in developing novel monomer systems and polymerization processes
  • Knowledge of scaling chemistries from lab to commercial production
  • Track record in securing intellectual property for materials in medical devices
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance, CAPA, and supply chain management in medtech

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies to accelerate synthetic chemistry innovation, intellectual property creation, and raw material target alignment across R&D functions
  • Lead collaboration with internal teams and external partners to optimize capabilities, develop strategic supplier relationships, and secure a reliable supply chain
  • Manage a team of scientific professionals, directing research priorities, resource allocation, and staff development
  • Oversee characterization of monomers and polymerization processes, scale-up activities from lab to commercial production, and ensure compliance with standards
  • Drive project milestones and coordinate design-build-test activities to advance early-stage projects
  • Support regulatory, CAPA, and supply risk mitigation efforts
  • Maintain financial targets, support organizational efficiency initiatives, EHS requirements, audit requests, and GMP requirements
