Dow

Stade, DE · Full-time · €12,000 – €18,000

About this role

Dow seeks an ambitious master's student in analytical chemistry for an internship supporting the Analytical Operations Department. Focus on analysis of fluorinated compounds in complex matrices within the Non Routine Analytical team. Contribute to advanced problem-solving for production sites in a global environment.

The project addresses detection and quantification of fluorinated compounds using Ion Chromatography (IC), Combustion Ion Chromatography (C-IC), and ICP-MS where applicable. Develop sample preparation strategies for complex matrices with high ionic strength. Optimize and validate methods beyond standard aqueous approaches.

Join a small, specialized team dedicated to method development and innovative analytical techniques. Gain direct project guidance while working closely with skilled analysts. Support Dow's production through reliable analytical solutions.

This role provides hands-on involvement in advanced techniques like C-IC. Explore connections between academic theory and industrial applications. Help deliver a sustainable future through science and collaboration.

  • Fluent in German and good working knowledge of English
  • Basic knowledge in chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques (e.g., IC, HPLC, GC-MS)
  • Experience in laboratory work, including sample preparation and handling of chemical substances
  • More than basic experience level in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with complex matrix analysis and/or fluorine chemistry and trace-level detection of fluorinated compounds (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement analytical methodologies for adsorbable organic fluorine (AOF), extractable organic fluorine (EOF), total fluorine, and fluoride
  • Employ Ion Chromatography (IC), Combustion Ion Chromatography (C-IC), and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)
  • Optimize analytical methods for complex industrial matrices
  • Validate developed methodologies
  • Develop sample preparation strategies for diverse complex matrices
  • Analyze fluorinated compounds in matrices with high ionic strength
  • Support production sites with advanced analytical problem-solving

Benefits

  • Hands-on work with advanced analytical methods such as Combustion Ion Chromatography (C-IC)
  • Explore relation between academic theory and industrial analytical applications
  • Join a small specialized team in a global international environment
  • Contribute perspectives to transform industries and shape the future
