About this role

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the development of novel biodegradable materials and fundamental understanding in the water-soluble technology field. The role focuses on leading programs in polymer design, leveraging scalable polymerization and modification routes. Responsibilities include investigating formulation-based structure property relationships.

Spend 60-70% of time in the laboratory setting performing routine and specialized activities. Utilize common and advanced laboratory test equipment for hands-on mechanical and performance testing. Execute development projects within the R&D group of a fast-growing company.

This cross-functional position collaborates with internal stakeholders, Poval resin division, and corporate R&D both locally and globally. Work closely with scientists, engineers, operations, sales, and marketing on development projects. Leverage external innovation sources including Kuraray’s R&D capabilities.

Lead projects for future market innovations with on-the-job training in laboratory techniques, lean innovation methodologies, and data analysis tools. Report to the Technology and Upstream Research R&D Manager. Provide coaching and guidance to team members in a non-supervisory capacity.

Requirements

  • Expertise in synthesis of water-soluble polymers, particularly PVOH-based systems
  • Deep knowledge of structure-property relationships in polymers and formulations
  • Proficiency with internal and external polymer characterization techniques
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment for mechanical and performance testing
  • Skilled in advanced data interpretation for polymer materials and processes
  • Familiarity with scalable polymerization and modification routes
  • Experience in risk assessments for material production and qualification
  • Ability to leverage external R&D resources for innovation

Responsibilities

  • Lead synthesis and evaluation of novel water-soluble polymeric systems within or tangential to the PVOH space
  • Develop and enhance understanding of key structure property relationships in novel and existing water-soluble polymers or formulation spaces
  • Utilize internal and external characterization techniques to assess polymer and material properties and behavior
  • Lead, develop, and establish new technology platform capabilities utilizing MonoSol’s innovation process and tools
  • Utilize common and advanced laboratory test equipment to perform hands-on mechanical and performance testing
  • Utilize advanced data interpretation methods to evaluate new materials, existing products and processes
  • Prepare for and facilitate risk assessments through collaboration with Poval and external partners
  • Collaborate locally and globally with scientists, engineers, operations, sales, and marketing team members
