About this role
Join Amgen’s Medicinal Chemistry group at the Research and Development facility in South San Francisco, where brand new state-of-the-art chemistry labs are being built. Design novel compounds for potential clinical development and serve as a Project Team Representative (PTR). Help advance programs in Amgen’s small molecule portfolio focused on oncology, inflammation, general medicine, and rare disease.
Lead several PhD level chemists in the design and synthesis of potential drug candidates while recruiting top talent. Manage an external synthetic chemistry team and collaborate with a diverse cross-functional team of research scientists. Determine team direction to advance innovative medicines serving patients with serious illnesses.
Work full time onsite in a collaborative, innovative, and science-based culture. Provide motivating professional development guidance and coaching to colleagues. Regularly communicate progress and strategy in various forums as part of the PTR role.

Requirements
- Doctorate degree PhD OR PharmD OR MD and 2 years of medicinal chemistry experience
- Master’s degree and 5 years of medicinal chemistry experience
- Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of medicinal chemistry experience
- Doctorate degree in chemistry specializing in organic chemistry and 6+ years of experience in synthetic organic and medicinal chemistry
- Experience participating on or leading medicinal chemistry teams to deliver candidates for clinical development
- Track record of successful drug discovery accomplishments (patent inventorship, conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications)
- Proven understanding of relevant drug discovery disciplines (chemistry, biology, safety, PKDM)
- Expert in modern medicinal and synthetic chemistry approaches
