US · Full-time · $44,000 – $86,000

About this role

GSK is a global biopharma company with a special purpose to unite science, technology and talent to get ahead of disease together. The Discovery Chemistry department seeks a 12-week summer intern to use organic synthesis and modern technologies to solve key challenges in a chemistry project or program. The group partners across research to deliver high-quality small molecules from hit generation through late-stage optimization.

The role involves synthesis of new chemical entities, medicinal chemistry data analytics, and designing compounds to test medicinal chemistry hypotheses. Interns perform accurate notebook recording, reaction set-up techniques, simple workup procedures, thin layer and flash chromatography. They also interpret basic NMR and mass spectroscopy data while practicing safe laboratory procedures.

Interns are completely embedded within a project team with accountabilities to deliver objectives through team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and interactions with adjacent disciplines. Matched with an experienced scientist for project support and success. Opportunities to engage with other scientific leaders across the department promote lasting relationships.

Gain exposure to medicinal chemistry problem-solving, structure-activity relationships, high-throughput experimentation, and modern methods of parallel synthesis. Participate in lunch & learn sessions where GSK scientists highlight achievements and deliver tutorials on fundamental principles. Showcase work and achievements to the department in an end-of-term presentation.
