About this role

The Director, Process Chemistry manages a portfolio of projects from the clinical pipeline of new drug products. They direct a team of process chemists supporting API campaigns for the small molecule portfolio. They oversee commercial manufacturing route definition, validation, and filing with the Manufacturing Division.

Critical tasks include oversight of new route design, synthetic methodology development, and scale-up. Support API campaigns for discovery and pre-clinical efforts by transferring technical information to Rahway, NJ sites and external CROs. Conduct scientific research to translate breakthroughs into world-class synthetic processes for human health products.

The role reports to the Executive Director, Head of Process Chemistry and Discovery Project Chemistry. Direct supervisory responsibility for approximately 15 scientists in multidisciplinary teams of synthetic organic chemists. Handle recruiting, appraisal, and development of personnel, including recommendations for transfers, promotions, and closures.

Invent and demonstrate new processes for commercial manufacture and prepare regulatory filings. Establish and maintain external contacts for Process Research & Development, especially in NJ/NY/PA. Interact with the academic community to advance pharmaceutical development.

Requirements

  • 8+ years drug discovery or drug development experience and demonstrated ability in leading cross-functional groups
  • Track record and commitment to employee development/retention
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Subject matter expertise in process chemistry with experience in commercial process development
  • Strength in delivering results on firm deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability in selection and prioritization of a portfolio of projects
  • Internationally recognized in the pharmaceutical development area with a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications and external research presentations
