About this role

At QinetiQ, join as a Research Chemist at our Haslar site to work with cutting-edge technology alongside brilliant minds. Provide air purification and atmosphere monitoring support to the Ministry of Defence, overseas navies, and commercial organisations in challenging enclosed environments such as submarines, ships, and armoured fighting vehicles.

Conduct practical laboratory investigations of technologies to maintain a safe breathable atmosphere. Undertake a variety of tasks ensuring technical solutions meet business and customer requirements. Projects target current issues in atmosphere monitoring and control plus novel research for future capabilities.

Work as part of a team based at the state-of-the-art Haslar Marine Technology Park. Facilities include ocean basin rotating arm and marine towing tank for unparalleled testing of surface ships, submarines, offshore structures, and renewable energy devices.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working in a laboratory environment
  • Good degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related subject
  • Demonstrable practical laboratory experience
  • Experience in gas chromatography (advantageous)
  • Experience in mass spectrometry (advantageous)
  • Experience in instrument analysis (advantageous)
  • Experience handling gases (advantageous)
  • Experience in contaminant removal (advantageous)

Responsibilities

  • Identify technology with potential for use in sealed environments
  • Assist in the design and build of test apparatus
  • Conduct laboratory assessments
  • Contribute to customer presentations and reports
  • Conduct practical laboratory investigation of technologies to maintain a safe breathable atmosphere
  • Provide occasional off-site service support to atmosphere monitoring equipment on submarines
  • Undertake gas concentration measurements during equipment trials
