About this role
At Johnson & Johnson, we believe health is everything. Our strength in healthcare innovation empowers us to build a world where complex diseases are prevented, treated, and cured. Join the Vision team as Senior Scientist, Synthetic Chemistry and Raw Materials in Jacksonville, Florida.
Fueled by innovation at the intersection of biology and technology, we’re developing the next generation of smarter, less invasive, more personalized vision treatments. The role owns raw material development, characterization and specifications to support product and process development with hands-on bench-top and pilot-scale work.
Passionate about improving vision treatments? Help combine cutting-edge insights, science, technology, and people to encourage eye care professionals and patients to protect, correct and enhance healthy sight. Collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams and external partners on IP strategy and knowledge sharing.
Maintain awareness of the global ocular materials IP landscape. Generate technical reports for internal and external stakeholders. Your talents will profoundly impact health for humanity through the J&J Vision product pipeline.
Requirements
- Expertise in synthetic chemistry and polymer science fundamentals
- Experience with monomer architecture, impurity profiles, and polymerization kinetics (photo and thermal)
- Proficiency in material characterization techniques including NMR, HPLC, UV/Vis, DMA, DSC, FTIR, XPS, and Rheology
- Knowledge of extraction processes, material stability, and structure-property relationships
- Ability to conduct literature and patent searches for monomer and polymer chemistries
- Skills in bench-top and pilot-scale process development for raw materials
- Familiarity with ocular materials IP landscape
- Cross-functional collaboration experience in product and process development
Responsibilities
- Lead raw material characterization to support product and process development milestones
- Plan and execute bench-top and pilot-scale process development activities, applying sound experimental design and data-driven decision making
- Identify target monomer and polymer chemistries via literature and patent searches; assess relevance to project milestones and IP strategy
- Develop novel monomer systems and perform process characterization to advance the J&J Vision product pipeline
- Troubleshoot material and process development issues using chemistry and polymer science fundamentals, focusing on monomer architecture, impurity profiles, polymerization kinetics, extraction processes, material stability, and structure-property relationships
- Apply and interpret a broad set of material characterization techniques (NMR, HPLC, UV/Vis, DMA, DSC, FTIR, XPS, Rheology) to inform decisions and product quality
- Maintain awareness of the global ocular materials IP landscape and generate technical reports for internal and external stakeholders
- Collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams and external partners; actively contribute to IP strategy and knowledge sharing
