Johnson & Johnson

San Diego, US · Full-time · $62,000 – $118,000

About this role

The Discovery Process Research group of Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine seeks an outstanding student for a summer internship in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, based in San Diego, CA. This role targets undergraduates or Ph.D. candidates in chemical sciences with prior training in synthetic organic chemistry. Interns gain exposure to the research engine at the intersection of Discovery and Process chemistry, contributing to novel chemical transformations.

Interns design and execute exploratory experiments focused on reaction discovery and optimization. They develop synthetic routes for small molecule intermediates and leverage high throughput experimentation techniques and catalysis. Daily tasks include synthesizing, purifying, characterizing compounds, and analyzing with NMR, LC-MS, HPLC.

Work occurs within cross-functional drug discovery teams at Johnson & Johnson, providing exposure to various functions. Participate in campus-wide activities across the San Diego summer intern community. Maintain compliant electronic laboratory notebook documentation and prepare technical reports.

Acquire real-life training in skills relevant to drug discovery employment. Opportunity to present findings to project teams and publish work. Build industrial experience and networking in innovative healthcare solutions.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an accredited college/university pursuing a Bachelor’s or Ph.D. degree in a field within the chemical sciences
  • Prior training in synthetic organic chemistry
  • Strong interest in reaction discovery and optimization
  • Completion of at least one year of organic chemistry course and lab work
  • Familiarity with standard analytical techniques (NMR, MS, HPLC)
  • Familiarity with synthetic workflows (work-ups, isolations, recrystallization, column chromatography)

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute exploratory experiments focused on reaction discovery and optimization
  • Develop and evaluate synthetic routes for small molecule intermediates
  • Leverage modern high throughput experimentation techniques and catalysis to address key synthetic challenges
  • Synthesize, purify, and characterize relevant organic compounds
