About this role

SES AI Corp. is powering electric transportation with advanced Li-Metal batteries, using superintelligent AI across R&D, manufacturing, and safety monitoring. The Principal Scientist, Synthetic Chemist reports to the Director of Electrolyte and assists in synthetic chemistry experiments. This role is based in Woburn, MA, and cannot be performed remotely.

Design synthetic routes for novel organic and inorganic materials tailored for lithium metal batteries. Perform wet lab experiments, purification, and characterization using instruments like NMR, GC, and LC-MS. Extract insights from large cell testing data to explore improvements in mobile energy storage.

Demonstrate advanced intellectual and technical leadership while adhering to safety and Good Laboratory Practice regulations. Collaborate and communicate with other research and development teams. Employ state-of-the-art synthetic, purification, and characterization technologies.

Optimize synthesis processes for scale-up and develop SOPs for novel materials. Author patents and publications to advance electrolyte innovations. Join a global team headquartered in Boston with operations in Singapore, Shanghai, and Seoul.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry with 5+ years post-graduate academic or industry experience related to electrolyte synthesis
  • Strong background in advanced synthetic chemistry in hetero elements
  • Proficiency with instrumentation including NMR, GC, and LC-MS, and quality control
  • Familiarity with advanced lithium metal battery electrolyte synthesis
  • Strong learning ability, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate complicated concepts, ideas

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate advanced intellectual and technical leadership
  • Design synthetic routes for novel organic and inorganic chemical materials for lithium metal batteries independently
  • Perform a variety of wet lab experiments and purification
  • Develop specific characterization plans for synthetic compounds via NMR, GC, and LC-MS
  • Optimize synthesis for scale-up and develop SOPs for novel synthetic materials
  • Adhere to all safety and Good Laboratory Practice regulations as well as company policies
  • Collaborate and communicate with other teams in research and development
  • Author patents and publications
