About this role

The bpi division sits within the Engineered Materials Division of Berry Global Inc., a US listed company with annual turnover around $13bn and over 40,000 employees. It has manufacturing sites across the UK, Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, and Romania. The role reports to the RD&I Manager at the Ardeer site, fulfilling technical requirements for industrial and agricultural businesses.

Provide a vital link between sales and production by technically approving new and existing product specifications. Assist in monitoring new customer trials during production testing and at end users. Optimise the use of recycled materials and research blend formulations for cost savings and product enhancement.

Conduct ongoing testing and statistical analysis on physical properties to meet specifications. Collect, analyse, and interpret data to identify improvements. Support operations in troubleshooting quality issues and improving output on designated units.

A 3-year framework underpins the role, including a 6-month shopfloor placement with 24/7 shift working to understand site processes. Participate in the green belt programme and work with the Continuous Improvement team on cost-saving projects. Regular contact with suppliers keeps pace with leading material technology.

Requirements

  • Recently graduated or final year student of a polymer or material science or chemical engineering based degree
  • Interest in the manufacturing industry
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent technical skills
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis on physical properties
  • Familiarity with polymer blend formulations and recycled materials
  • Understanding of film specifications and quality control processes

Responsibilities

  • Provide a vital link between sales and production by technically approving new and existing product specifications

  • Research and develop blend formulations for material cost savings and product enhancement
  • Conduct ongoing testing and perform statistical analysis on physical properties to ensure product specifications are met
  • Collect, analyse and interpret data to identify areas for improvement
  • Supervise the implementation of new polymer grades/alternative materials
  • Support the Operations team to improve output, scrap and downtime on designated units
