About this role
GSK is a global biopharma company uniting science, technology and talent to get ahead of disease together. The Discovery Chemistry department seeks a 12-week summer intern to focus on organic synthesis and modern industrial and chemical technologies to solve key challenges in a GSK chemistry project or program. This role partners with teams to deliver high-quality small molecules from hit generation through late-stage optimization.
The intern will synthesize new chemical entities, perform medicinal chemistry data analytics, and design compounds to test medicinal chemistry hypotheses. Responsibilities include accurate notebook recording, reaction set-up techniques, simple workup procedures, thin layer and flash chromatography, and basic NMR and mass spectroscopy interpretation. Safe laboratory practices are essential throughout.
You will be embedded within a project team with accountabilities to deliver objectives through team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and interactions with adjacent disciplines. Matched with an experienced scientist for support, you will engage with scientific leaders across the department to promote lasting relationships.
This experience improves organic chemistry knowledge while providing exposure to medicinal chemistry problem-solving, structure-activity relationships, high-throughput experimentation, and modern parallel synthesis methods. GSK scientists deliver tutorials on fundamental principles via lunch & learn sessions. Showcase your achievements in a department presentation at the end of the term.
