About this role

At bp, the Inorganic Chemistry Lead joins a global team of scientists providing data and insight across research and innovation into low carbon technologies. This role supports bp's strategic framework across fuels, biofuels, SAF, biogas, feedstocks, hydrogen, and cross‑cutting low‑carbon initiatives.

The Lead is responsible for fundamental and exploratory studies in chemistry and catalysis to support technology deployed within the business. They lead experimental programmes in heterogeneous catalysis to develop new technology for conversion chemistry, designing, executing, and interpreting experimental work.

The role reports to the Applied Chemistry Manager within the Bioenergy & Hydrogen Technology team, part of the Fuels & Low Carbon Technology global organization. bp provides an open and inclusive culture with a great work-life balance and tremendous learning and development opportunities.

Requirements

  • PhD in Chemistry or a related field, or a Master’s/Bachelor’s degree with demonstrated relevant experience.
  • Experience in chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis, or related fields.
  • Resourceful experimentalist with practical research experience in laboratory scale reaction testing equipment.
  • Ability to work closely with technology colleagues to identify fundamental needs in chemistry, catalysis, modelling, and characterization, devise relevant approaches, and deliver results.
  • Knowledge of key catalyst characterization techniques and ability to interpret and apply results.
  • Good interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, standards‑adherent experimental operations aligned with bp's HSSE goals.
  • Conduct fundamental and exploratory studies in chemistry and catalysis to support technology deployment.
  • Lead experimental programmes in heterogeneous catalysis to develop new conversion chemistry technology.
  • Lead the design, execution, and interpretation of experimental work to deliver set objectives.
  • Provide expertise in laboratory-scale evaluation and measurement and innovative analytical techniques.
  • Develop relevant in-house capability by identifying and implementing standard methodologies in chemistry.
