US · Full-time · $44,000 – $86,000

About this role

GSK is a global biopharma company with a special purpose to unite science, technology and talent to get ahead of disease together. The Discovery Chemistry department seeks a 12-week summer intern to use organic synthesis and modern industrial and chemical technologies to solve key challenges in a GSK chemistry project or program.

The role involves synthesis of new chemical entities, medicinal chemistry data analytics, designing compounds to test medicinal chemistry hypotheses, and learning technological advances when opportunities arise. Interns handle accurate notebook recording, reaction set-up techniques, simple workup procedures, thin layer and flash chromatography, and basic NMR and mass spectroscopy interpretation.

Interns are completely embedded within a project team with specific accountabilities to help deliver objectives through immersion in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and interaction with adjacent disciplines. Matched with an experienced scientist for project support, with opportunities to engage other scientific leaders across the department to build lasting relationships.

This experience improves organic chemistry knowledge while gaining exposure to medicinal chemistry problem-solving, structure-activity relationships, high-throughput experimentation, and modern methods of parallel synthesis. GSK scientists deliver tutorials on fundamental principles through lunch & learn sessions. Interns showcase work and achievements in a department presentation at term's end.
