About this role

LGC ASSURE Sports & Specialised Analytical Services is an internationally recognised world-class testing laboratory specialising in banned substance and anti-doping testing. We are seeking a highly motivated, proactive Senior Scientist to join our Animal Sports Confirmatory team.

In this role, you will provide a high-quality analytical chemistry service to customers such as the BHA, IHRB, FEI, and GBGB, helping to ensure the highest standards of quality, integrity, and welfare in animal sports. Confirmatory analysis involves testing samples for the presence of suspected drugs to a standard of legal proof.

You will plan and conduct individual work including sample extraction, analysis, data processing, and case file report writing in accordance with ISO17025 requirements. The role also includes providing expert witness testimony evidence where necessary.

We are looking for a teammate who works flexibly and with initiative, bringing forward new insights while demonstrating leadership within the laboratory. A confident presenter with strong interpersonal skills, you will be operationally aware and able to build improvements in output and efficiency.

Requirements

  • Minimum of BSc in Chemistry (or equivalent experience) and experience of working within a commercial analytical laboratory.
  • Proven hands-on experience with LC-MS and GC-MS techniques, with the ability to troubleshoot system problems.
  • Experience with high-resolution accurate mass (HRAMS) is desirable.
  • Established knowledge of ISO 17025 or other relevant quality standard.
  • Proven planning and organisational skills.
  • Proven communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly and with initiative, bringing forward new insights.
  • Confident presenter with the ability to discuss and answer queries with a range of partners.

Responsibilities

  • Performing, developing and troubleshooting new extraction techniques – solid phase extraction, liquid/liquid extractions, etc.
  • Using high-spec analytical instrumentation for chromatography and mass spectrometry – GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS and HRAMS.
  • Critically assessing and appraising analytical data using applications such as Xcalibur, Sciex OS and MassLynx, and presenting/interpreting results.
  • Engaging in direct customer contact for reporting results.
  • Providing leadership within the laboratory and management of scientific programmes and work schedules.
  • Strictly adhering to protocols within an ISO17025 accredited laboratory, always promoting good laboratory practices and quality standards.
  • Planning and conducting individual work including sample extraction, analysis, data processing, and case file report writing.
  • Providing expert witness testimony evidence where necessary.
