At Johnson & Johnson Vision, the Director of Synthetic Chemistry and Raw Materials leads a team in developing materials for contact lens and ocular implant products. Fueled by innovation at the intersection of biology and technology, this role supports the product pipeline through novel monomer systems and intellectual property. The purpose is to collaborate with internal and external partners to scale and commercialize chemistries aligned with innovation goals. Oversee characterization of monomers, polymerization processes, and scale-up from lab to commercial production. Ensure compliance with standards, documentation, and supply chain reliability for new initiatives.

As a People Leader in R&D Product Development and Materials/Biomaterials Science, manage scientific professionals including synthetic chemists, polymer chemists, and formulation scientists. Direct research priorities, resource allocation, and staff development to foster impactful innovations. Coordinate design-build-test activities across functions.

Drive project milestones, regulatory efforts, CAPA, and supply risk mitigation to advance early-stage projects. Contribute to financial targets, organizational efficiency, EHS, audits, and GMP requirements. Help profoundly impact health for humanity through smarter, personalized vision solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering with 8-12 years of experience
  • Experience leading synthetic chemists, polymer chemists, polymer scientists, and formulation scientists
  • Expertise in developing novel monomer systems for contact lens and ocular implant materials
  • Knowledge of scaling chemistries from lab to commercial production
  • Proficiency in securing intellectual property for material innovations
  • Skills in characterizing monomers and polymerization processes
  • Ability to manage supplier relationships and supply chain for raw materials

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies to accelerate synthetic chemistry innovation, intellectual property creation, and raw material target alignment across R&D functions
  • Lead collaboration with internal teams and external partners to optimize capabilities, develop strategic supplier relationships, and secure a reliable supply chain for new product initiatives
  • Manage a team of scientific professionals, directing research priorities, resource allocation, and staff development to foster impactful chemistry and material innovations
  • Oversee characterization of monomers and polymerization processes, scale-up activities from lab to commercial production, and ensure compliance with standards and documentation
  • Drive project milestones and coordinate design-build-test activities to advance early-stage projects, supporting regulatory, CAPA, and supply risk mitigation efforts
  • Perform other related duties such as maintaining financial targets, supporting organizational efficiency initiatives, EHS requirements, audit requests and GMP requirements
