Springfield, US · Full-time · $110,000 – $150,000

About this role

Hexion is seeking a Polymer Scientist to join the Research & Development team. The first project supports advancement of high-performance superplasticizers for concrete applications. This role focuses on the design and development of innovative polymer technologies that enable enhanced workability, durability, and sustainability in cementitious systems.

The position contributes to differentiated solutions aligned with evolving customer needs and low-carbon construction trends. Work centers on establishing structure–property relationships to improve dispersion efficiency, slump retention, and cement compatibility across diverse formulations.

You will collaborate across R&D, technical service, and manufacturing to translate laboratory discoveries into commercial products. Analytical techniques such as GPC/SEC, NMR, FTIR, and rheology guide development decisions while partnering with process teams on scale-up and commercialization.

Location is flexible, with initial work in Springfield, OR until the Dublin, OH lab opens in 2027. Hexion offers an innovation-driven culture where curiosity is rewarded and the possibilities for sustainable materials are endless.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in polymer synthesis and characterization (industrial or academic)
  • Strong understanding of water-soluble polymers, dispersants, or surfactant systems
  • Broad polymer synthesis and compounding experience

Responsibilities

  • Design, synthesize, and optimize water-soluble polymers to meet targeted performance criteria
  • Establish structure–property relationships to improve dispersion efficiency, slump retention, and cement compatibility
  • Plan and execute experimental programs to support new product development and cost/performance optimization
  • Evaluate polymer performance in cementitious systems in collaboration with application development teams
  • Utilize analytical techniques including GPC/SEC, NMR, FTIR, and rheology to characterize polymers
  • Partner with process development and manufacturing teams to support scale-up and commercialization
  • Engage with technical service and commercial teams to translate customer requirements into R&D solutions

Benefits

  • Flexible location with initial work in Springfield, OR until Dublin, OH lab opens in 2027
