The Synthetic Chemist applies scientific expertise, analytical skills, problem-solving capabilities, and relevant language skills to build CAS’s world-class collection of chemical information data. They curate high-quality research data from patents across 64 patent offices, thousands of journals, technical reports, books, conference proceedings, and dissertations in 180 countries and over 50 languages.

This role on the Content Operations team leverages education and specialized training for indexing substance and reaction data in patents, journals, and chemistry-related literature. The position provides scientific and content knowledge, capabilities, insights, and solutions for other CAS functions. It is located at headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.

Synthetic Chemists foster quality and productivity by learning policies, work habits, insights, and tool usage from trainers. They contribute to making scientific insights accessible to innovators worldwide. The role emphasizes strong attention to detail and independent work.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Organic Chemistry or a related science preferred
  • 1-3 years of related work experience preferred
  • Chinese, Japanese, and/or Korean language skills desired
  • Excellent scientific reading comprehension and writing skills
  • Ability to learn policies, work habits, insights, and tool usage from trainers to foster quality and productivity
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, collect, and curate chemical structure data disclosed in patent or journal publications using CAS indexing policies and expertise
  • Leverage technical knowledge and applicable language skills to extract key insights and build the CAS Content Collection
  • Index substance and reaction data found in patents, journals, and other chemistry-related literature
  • Curate high-quality research data from patents across 64 patent offices and thousands of journals
  • Apply scientific expertise to mine, assess, and apply chemical information from technical reports, books, conference proceedings, and dissertations
  • Provide scientific and content knowledge, capabilities, insights, and solutions for other CAS functions
