The Synthetic Chemist / Natural Product Chemist applies scientific expertise, analytical skills, problem solving capabilities, and relevant language skills to build CAS’s world-class collection of chemical information data. They curate high-quality research data from patents from 64 patent offices, thousands of journals, technical reports, books, conference proceedings and dissertations published in 180 countries and in more than 50 languages. The role includes indexing substance and reaction data found in patents, journals, and other chemistry-related literatures.

The CAS team is global, diverse, endlessly curious and strives to make scientific insights accessible to innovators worldwide. This position is located in headquarters in Columbus, Ohio, on the Content Operations team. It leverages education and specialized training in synthetic chemistry or natural products.

The incumbent provides scientific and content knowledge, capabilities, insights, and solutions for other CAS functions. They foster quality and productivity by learning policies, work habits, insights, and tool usage from trainers. Strong attention to detail enables independent work on complex chemical data.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Synthetic Chemistry / Natural Product or a related science preferred; alternatively, bachelor's degree with 1-3 years of related work experience
  • Japanese and/or Korean language skill desired
  • Excellent scientific reading comprehension and writing skills
  • Ability to learn policies, work habits, insights, and tool usage from trainers to foster quality and productivity
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, collect, and curate valuable chemical structure data disclosed in patent or journal publications, utilizing CAS indexing policies and expertise
  • Leverage technical knowledge and applicable language skills to extract key insights and build the CAS Content Collection
  • Index substance and reaction data found in patents, journals, and other chemistry-related literatures
  • Curate high-quality research data from patents in 64 patent offices, thousands of journals, technical reports, books, conference proceedings, and dissertations
  • Apply scientific expertise and problem-solving capabilities to chemical information from publications in 180 countries and more than 50 languages
  • Provide scientific and content knowledge, capabilities, insights, and solutions for other CAS functions
