About this role
The Sessional Lecturer position involves delivering practical sections for CHM237H1Y, Introductory Inorganic Chemistry II, a continuation of CHM236H1. The course covers periodic properties of elements, structures, bonding and properties of main group compounds and transition metal complexes, inorganic solid-state materials, and solid-state chemistry applications. Strong emphasis is placed on laboratory techniques and communication skills through practical components.
Day-to-day duties include coordinating and delivering in-person laboratories on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm for approximately 40 students. Responsibilities encompass laboratory preparation, organizational issues of delivery, and ensuring effective lab sessions. The role supports estimated enrolment with structured scheduling during the summer semester.
Work in the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Arts & Science, supervising lab demonstrators with 280 TA hours of support. Collaborate with teaching assistants on supervision, tests, exams, and grading processes. Operate within the St. George campus environment focused on undergraduate inorganic chemistry education.
This summer appointment from May 1 to August 31, 2026, offers opportunity to apply expertise in inorganic chemistry laboratories at the university level. Develop and refine skills in lab coordination, student assessment, and academic instruction. Contribute to the practical training of students in advanced chemical concepts and techniques.
Requirements
- PhD in chemistry or a closely related field
- Experience in lecturing and/or coordinating laboratories in inorganic chemistry at the university level (preferred)
- Knowledge of periodic properties of elements, main group compounds, and transition metal complexes
- Familiarity with inorganic solid-state materials and solid-state chemistry
- Ability to supervise teaching assistants in lab settings
- Proficiency in laboratory preparation and delivery for undergraduate courses
Responsibilities
- Deliver the laboratories of CHM237H1Y during the summer 2026 semester
- Coordinate labs including preparation and delivery with attendant organizational issues
- Supervise lab demonstrators (teaching assistants)
- Facilitate and mark laboratory tests and exams
- Submit final laboratory grades
