About this role
BlueHalo is seeking a Research Scientist to lead a research project dealing with the synthesis and characterization of nano- and microparticles for sensing applications. The researcher will design optical assays to detect and quantify biological contaminants in water and soil matrices. Technologies developed will be extensively tested and validated under this program.
Duties include nano- and micromaterials synthesis using standard methods and novel protocols, often requiring air/moisture sensitive materials handled in inert atmospheres. Prepare hybrid/multifunctional materials involving biological components and characterize them using spectroscopic and optical techniques. Assays will focus on rapid responses with minimal false positives, exploring absorbance, fluorescence, and other outputs.
Work will be performed in the Air and Space Biosciences Division at the 711th Human Performance Wing in the Air Force Research Laboratory. Collaborate with the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine in the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. Join a diverse team of scientists working in sensor development with expertise in public health, biology, and nanotechnology.
Projects emphasize easy-to-deploy assay formats using miniaturized and portable devices including smartphones and tablets. Mentor junior scientists and intern students while writing proposals for funding agencies. Present findings in progress meetings and conferences.
