This role sits within the Fuels & Low Carbon Technology (F&LCT) organization, a global team of over 300 technologists, scientists, and engineers developing groundbreaking solutions across bp’s fuels, refining, bioenergy, and hydrogen businesses.

As the Inorganic Chemistry Lead, you will join the Applied Chemistry team in the Bioenergy & Hydrogen Technology (B&HT) group, which focuses on crafting and scaling technologies that unlock bp’s low carbon growth. Your day-to-day work involves leading fundamental and exploratory studies in chemistry and catalysis to support technology deployment and appraise new processes of future interest to bp.

You will lead experimental programmes in heterogeneous catalysis to develop new technology for conversion chemistry, designing, executing, and interpreting experimental work to deliver set objectives. The role also requires providing expertise in laboratory-scale evaluation and measurement, as well as applying innovative analytical techniques to drive insights across fuels, biofuels, SAF, biogas, feedstocks, hydrogen, oil and gas, and cross-cutting low-carbon initiatives.

This position reports to the Applied Chemistry Manager and offers the chance to contribute to bp’s strategic framework while working closely with technology colleagues to identify fundamental needs in chemistry, catalysis, modelling, and characterization. You will also help develop relevant in-house capability by identifying and implementing best practices from industry and academia, supporting bp’s low carbon and operational ambitions.

Requirements

  • PhD in Chemistry or a related field, or a Master’s/Bachelor’s degree with demonstrated relevant experience.
  • Experience in chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis, or related fields.
  • Resourceful experimentalist with practical research experience in laboratory scale reaction testing equipment.
  • Ability to work closely with technology colleagues to identify fundamental needs in chemistry, catalysis, modelling, and characterization, devise relevant approaches, and deliver/transfer results and insights.
  • Knowledge of key catalyst characterization techniques and ability to interpret and apply results.
  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, standards‑adherent experimental operations, contributing to the development of HSSE expectations aligned with bp's goals.
  • Lead fundamental and exploratory studies in chemistry and catalysis to support technology deployed within the business and appraise new processes of potential future interest to bp.
  • Lead experimental programmes in heterogeneous catalysis to develop new technology for conversion chemistry.
  • Lead the design, execution, and interpretation of experimental work to deliver upon set objectives.
  • Provide expertise in laboratory-scale evaluation and measurement and/or the application of innovative analytical techniques.
  • Develop relevant in-house capability by identifying and implementing standard methodologies in chemistry, including evaluation from industry and academia.
