About this role

As an Organic Chemist at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will engage in hands-on synthetic chemistry within the Manufacturing & Development labs. This role involves carrying out organic synthesis processes across various scales while ensuring quality and safety benchmarks for clients and partners.

Daily activities include planning and designing experiments to synthesize and analyze organic compounds, developing and optimizing chemical processes. You will characterize compounds using analytical techniques such as NMR, IR, MS, HPLC, and GC to confirm structure and purity.

You will work closely with diverse operational teams to reach project objectives, following strict safety protocols and performing risk assessments. The laboratory environment requires PPE and adherence to ISO 14001 & 9001 standards, with a culture of proactive safety reporting.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of organic chemistry principles and synthesis methods.
  • Hands-on experience with organic synthesis at various scales (gram to kilogram).
  • Proficiency in analytical techniques such as NMR, IR, MS, HPLC, and GC.
  • Ability to perform risk assessments and follow strict safety protocols in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience with chemical process development and optimization for safety and efficiency.
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards such as ISO 14001 and 9001.
  • Capability to collaborate with diverse operational teams and support departmental metrics.

Responsibilities

  • Support the M&D value stream leader in delivering departmental critical metrics: safety, quality, delivery, cost, and process improvements.
  • Maintain departmental SOPs, WIs, SWS, SPL, and training matrix, and participate in internal and external audits.
  • Follow all safety protocols, conduct EHS GEMBAs, and report hazards in the Interlex system in a timely manner.
  • Perform risk assessments for chemical operations and implement measures to mitigate risks.
  • Plan, design, and complete experiments to synthesize and analyze organic compounds.
  • Develop and optimize chemical processes for new compounds or modify existing processes for safety and efficiency.
  • Synthesize organic compounds at various scales (gram to kilogram) using analytical techniques such as NMR, IR, MS, HPLC, and GC for characterization.
  • Stay updated with advancements in organic chemistry through literature review and apply knowledge to ongoing projects.
