Biberach an der Riß, DE · Internship · €12,000 – €24,000
About this role
Are you passionate about science and eager to make a difference in healthcare? Boehringer Ingelheim offers interns the opportunity to explore the pharmaceutical world from the inside at the main research site in Biberach an der Riß, Germany. You will collaborate closely with experienced scientists, exchanging ideas and gaining valuable insights.
During the internship, conduct synthesis of new molecules using microscale high-throughput, medium scale batch, and flow methods to support MedChem Technologies projects. Plan and execute organic chemistry experiments, including purification by chromatography and characterization of new molecular entities. Analyze experimental data with LC-MS and NMR, interpreting results in electronic laboratory notebooks.
Work as part of a team in the Technology Group in Medicinal Chemistry, contributing to in-house projects. Exchange ideas with experts and conduct scientific literature searches on synthetic methods and reaction mechanisms. Follow laboratory safety protocols and ensure compliance with internal standards.
Gain hands-on experience while exploring and optimizing synthetic methods for improved scope, yield, and scalability. Learn from a company shaping the future of healthcare, supporting personal and professional development. This role provides direct exposure to pharmaceutical research environments.
Requirements
- Completed master’s degree in organic chemistry (PhD students in their last years of doctoral studies is a plus)
- Comprehensive and state of the art knowledge of organic chemistry and reaction mechanisms
- Hands-on experience with different laboratory reaction setups, including inert atmosphere techniques and purification methods. Experience with photo-/electro-/flow chemistry as well as parallel synthesis (high/medium throughput) is a plus
- Experience in analytical techniques for reaction monitoring and characterization of molecules (NMR, LC-MS)
- Data analysis skills (Excel/Python) are desirable
- Proficiency in scientific searching engines such as Reaxys or Scifinder and chemical drawing tools
- Intercultural competencies, ideally shown by experience abroad
- Proficient oral and written communication skills in English (good command in German is a plus)
Responsibilities
- Conduct the synthesis of new molecules (microscale high-throughput, medium scale in batch and flow) to support chemistry enablement projects in the MedChem Technologies group
- Plan and execute organic chemistry experiments, including purification (e.g., chromatography) and characterization of new molecular entities
- Analyze experimental data (e.g. by LC-MS and NMR), interpret results, and document findings in electronic laboratory notebooks
- Conduct scientific literature searches to gather information on synthetic methods and reaction mechanisms
- Explore and optimize synthetic methods with the focus on improving scope, yield and scalability
- Follow laboratory safety protocols and ensure compliance with internal standards
