About this role

The Research Chemist provides scientific and technical support to the Uniformed Services University Center for Biotechnology (4DBio3). The role involves serving on an interdisciplinary team, collaborating with Principal Investigators, Co-Investigators, and research personnel to conduct experiments, analyze data, and drive scientific discovery. This is an on-site position requiring a thorough government background check.

Develop chemical formulations for wound care, focusing on hydrogels, nanoparticles, and biopolymers that promote healing and infection control. Design testing methodologies to validate wound healing technologies. Synthesize, purify, and analyze peptides for clinical applications using state-of-the-art methodologies.

Collaborate in planning and executing multiple research studies while supporting and overseeing R&D projects to meet timelines and deliverables. Provide training and supervision to entry-level research staff. Develop technical and programmatic strategies addressing DoD CBRN priorities.

Advance the Photonic Antimicrobial Wound Surface (PAWS)-Dressing towards clinical translation to benefit injured Service Members and civilians. Contribute to funding opportunities and remain current with scientific literature. Align work with military requirements for combat casualty care and biofilm prevention.

Requirements

  • PhD in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline + 8 years experience
  • Expertise in peptide chemistry for the design/synthesis of complex peptides
  • Proficiency in designing synthetic routes for complex molecules
  • Experience developing chemical formulations for wound care applications
  • Knowledge of hydrogel, nanoparticle, and biopolymer technologies
  • Skilled in analytical method development and data interpretation
  • Ability to handle chemicals safely following internal safety processes

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Principal Investigators, Co-Investigators and research team members in the planning and execution of multiple research studies
  • Develop chemical formulations for wound care, focusing on materials that promote healing and infection control, such as hydrogels, nanoparticles and biopolymers
  • Design testing methodologies for validation of wound healing technologies
  • Design, synthesize, purify and analyze peptides for clinical applications
  • Develop and execute synthetic strategies towards complex molecules using state-of-the-art synthetic methodologies
  • Develop and implement new analytical methods as needed to support project progress
  • Analyze experimental data and interpret results using scientific principles and statistical analysis
  • Prepare, write, review and edit research progress reports, conference abstracts, technical presentations, and scientific manuscripts
