About this role

The Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track assistant professor position from chemists in analytical biochemistry. DNS houses biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and environmental science undergraduate programs plus graduate programs in chemistry, marine estuarine sciences, and toxicology. This creates an outstanding collaborative environment for teaching diverse students for futures in industry, government, and graduate schools.

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate chemistry courses supporting ACS-certified biochemistry and chemistry programs plus courses in the candidate’s specific areas of expertise. Develop pedagogical skills to teach general chemistry and biochemistry while motivating a diverse student body. Daily tasks involve mentoring undergraduates and implementing research projects in a supportive academic setting.

Create a strong, collaborative research program in biochemistry, metabolomics, and biomolecule detection that complements research across the School of Agriculture and Natural Sciences in environmental and toxicology programs. Secure funding from various agencies to sustain this independent research. Engage with internal and external constituents through communication and operation of office equipment.

Requirements

  • PhD in Chemistry from an accredited institution
  • Experience teaching and/or mentoring undergraduates and implementing research projects
  • Research skills related to the isolation, detection, purification of biological and environmental metabolites
  • Ability to develop an independent research program in this area
  • Desire to develop pedagogical skills and teach general chemistry and biochemistry
  • Strong writing skills
  • Ability to motivate and inspire a diverse student body to be successful
