About this role
The NRL 5600 customer conducts research and technology development in chemical threat detection and identification. Advances in analytical chemistry, photonics, spectroscopy, and polymer chemistry transition new discoveries to fieldable systems for the warfighter. Partners include academia, industry, and defense agencies.
Recent work focuses on adapting spectroscopic analysis, such as Raman scattering and infrared absorption, to integrated photonic circuits and systems. The primary role makes new scientific discoveries and applies them for advanced device development and system integration. This creates enabling technologies for the warfighter.
Work combines laboratory-based data acquisition, experimental design, and computer-based data analysis and reporting. Requires skill in oral and written communication, plus ability to learn new methods and techniques. May involve travel, briefing sponsors, authoring reports, and proposing research programs.
Collaborate with diverse partners to advance state-of-the-art technologies. Contribute to fieldable systems detecting threats. Gain exposure to cutting-edge photonics and chemistry applications in defense.
Requirements
- Experience with lasers, spectroscopy, and optics
- Experience with analytical chemistry
- Basic computer programming (Python or similar) and data analysis skills
- Excellent communication skills in oral and written forms
- Comfort in a laboratory-based setting
- Knowledge of photonics, photonic integrated circuits, and waveguides
- Secret clearance required
Responsibilities
- Make new scientific discoveries and apply them for advanced device development
- Conduct system integration to create enabling technologies for the warfighter
- Utilize optics and photonics, including fiber optics and lasers
- Work with photonic integrated circuits, including waveguides
- Perform optical spectroscopy, including Raman scattering and infrared absorption
- Apply analytical chemistry and polymer chemistry
- Conduct data analysis and processing
- Employ synthetic organic chemistry and nonlinear optics
