The Synthetic Chemist / Natural Product Chemist applies scientific expertise, analytical skills, and problem-solving to build CAS’s world-class collection of chemical information data. They curate high-quality research data from patents across 64 offices, thousands of journals, and other sources in 180 countries and over 50 languages. The role includes indexing substance and reaction data from chemistry-related literature.
This position joins the Content Operations team at headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. Incumbents leverage education and training to mine, assess, and apply scientific information, helping businesses thrive. They provide scientific and content knowledge for other CAS functions.
Candidates develop skills in CAS indexing policies, tool usage, and productivity through training. The role fosters quality curation using attention to detail and independent work habits. It offers opportunities to extract key insights using technical knowledge and language skills.
Requirements
- Advanced degree in Synthetic Chemistry / Natural Product or a related science preferred; alternatively, bachelor's degree with 1-3 years of related work experience
- Japanese and/or Korean language skills desired
- Excellent scientific reading comprehension and writing skills
- Ability to learn policies, work habits, insights, and tool usage from trainers to foster quality and productivity
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
- Analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities relevant to chemical data curation
- Specialized training in synthetic or natural product chemistry
Responsibilities
- Analyze, collect, and curate valuable chemical structure data from patent or journal publications using CAS indexing policies and expertise
- Leverage technical knowledge and applicable language skills to extract key insights and build the CAS Content Collection
- Index substance and reaction data found in patents, journals, technical reports, books, conference proceedings, and dissertations
- Apply scientific expertise to curate high-quality research data from sources in more than 50 languages
- Provide scientific and content knowledge, capabilities, insights, and solutions for other CAS functions
- Utilize problem-solving capabilities to assess and apply chemical information from global literature
