The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at California State University San Marcos seeks a part-time lecturer for Fall 2026 to teach CHEM 202L: Organic Chemistry Lab. This in-person role supports students majoring in science through a structured laboratory course focused on organic compounds.

The course is the second in a sequence introducing properties of organic compounds. Topics include bonding structure, stereochemistry, nomenclature, functional group properties, acid/base phenomena, reaction mechanisms, kinetics, organic synthesis, and spectroscopic structure determination.

Classes meet Tuesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. The position is housed in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and requires all work to be performed within the State of California.

Requirements

  • A Master of Science in Chemistry
  • Experience teaching chemistry at the college level
  • Ability to work in the State of California as a condition of employment
  • A Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry
  • Experience teaching a course in analytical chemistry or instrumental analysis
  • Demonstrated intercultural competence and commitment to serving a diverse campus community

Responsibilities

  • Deliver lectures and supervise laboratory sessions for CHEM 202L Organic Chemistry Lab
  • Cover bonding structure, stereochemistry, nomenclature, and functional group properties
  • Teach acid/base phenomena, reaction mechanisms, kinetics, and organic synthesis
  • Introduce spectroscopic methods for structure determination
  • Assess student performance through lab reports, exams, and practical evaluations
  • Maintain compliance with all CSU policies including in-state work requirements
